Initial Ideas (Assignment)

1. Empire Magazine (November 2011)

Image result for empire magazine november 2011- Cover page has films which weren't released yet (exclusive information of films). And the star vehicles Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara both using direct mode of address
- Reviews both mainstream films and art films (independent films) but, articles concentrate on the mainstream. (Wikipedia) 
- Feature questions to see how wealthy celebrities answer and see how well they have of an understanding of the realities of middle-class people. E.g. How much is a pint of milk?
- Empire magazine also do interviews of actor and actresses of a wide range of topics from serious interviews to interviews to entertain readers like My Movie Mastermind.
- Has a contest called "Spine Quote" which contains a challenging quote on the spine of the book
- Has multiple double page spreads, first one is an advertisement for a movie called "In Time" featuring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake. Another consists of the question and answer game for celebrities "A Pint of Milk" which is also, a comedic interview.  
- The magazine also does cinema reviews for new movies that recently come out, page 40 has a review for the movie "Contagion" with the rating "Unmissable" (5 stars).

2. Empire Magazine (December 2009) 

- The front cover features the star vehicle Matt Damon using indirect mode of address which connotes that he is a mysterious man. Furthermore, the low angle shot make the star vehicle look bigger and more powerful than he is implying that he is a strong character. Also, below the cover line "Icons of the Decade" is a gun suggesting to the audience that he is a dangerous person, and not to be messed with and that he has enemies who are out to get him
- The cover line "The ten greatest characters of the nougthties..." connotes that Matt Damon's character "Jason Bourne" is worthy of being in the top ten characters, made in the 90s, further suggesting that his character is one which is loved by many and that the acting, directing and the movie overall was great. 

3. Total Film (March 2018)

- The front cover consists of a star vehicle Alicia Vikander playing as the popular game character Lara Croft, the use of direct mode of address connotes that she is confident and independent moreover, this attitude implyies that she is a strong and substantial character of the movie. Furthermore, the mise en scene shows she is carrying a bow with arrows and a climbing axe and she is covered in bandages and dirt suggesting that she is a hunter.
- Furthermore, there is a cover line "Tomb Raider" in orange and sans serif font going across the middle of the front cover showing the target audience what the magazine is about.
Image result for total film march 2018- On top of that, in the top right corner behind the the bold, white masthead are two characters from two other movies connoting to the audience that there is more in store in the magazine and different genres to read about.









4. Sight & Sound (January 2018)

-The front covers featuring the star vehicle Daniel Kaluuya using direct mode of address to the audience with a third of his face red which connotes blood, danger and pain. Furthermore, this draws in the target audience to see what is going on in the picture, moreover the are secondary images of people looking into the distance and people hunting and laughing. This front cover connotes that the reader will experience a rollercoaster of emotions.

Image result for sight and sound magazine january 2018- The double page spread has the title "Films of the year" and also a kicker which talks about "race, gender and technology" this double page spread draws in the reader by talking about relevant and time-changing events. On top of that, the image for the double page spread is full pf iconic characters of the previous year, from impactful movies.
- Surprisingly, there are no interviews in the magazine however, it contains detailed reviews on many movies but, it isn't rated X/10 how Empire magazine does it.
- There are no contests for the readers which suggest that this is a more serious magazine.
